projects >> SGP HUMANITARIAN YOUTH PROJECT

The project assists refugee and humanitarian young people ages 12 – 24 years of age with their settlement needs in Blacktown and Penrith Local Government Areas through the provision of information and casework referrals and information session on key settlement issues

Educational programs
Education and training programs remain the most requested programming from newly arrived refugee young people and their parents. The Humanitarian Youth Project provides ongoing programming and support to young people through a diverse number of after school education programs delivered with local partners including:

  • Homework Support Program for high school students held on Thursday afternoons 4: 00 – 6:00pm during school term.
  • Beginners and Intermediate Computer Training Program delivered in partnership with TAFE.
  • Weekly Work Jam delivered in partnership with Blacktown Youth Service Association (BYSA). A combination of digital photography, poetry and drama workshops are delivered to assist young people with their English skills in a fun and interactive environment.
  • Sporting Programs & Activities
    The youth project is involved in two ongoing sporting programs in Blacktown LGA

  • Refugee Soccer Project. In Partnership with the UNSW Football United Program and Blacktown PCYC this program delivers a weekly Saturday in the Park project. Gala events, community BBQs and holiday soccer clinics are delivered on an ad hoc basic. Participants are linked to mainstream soccer clubs in Blacktown LGA and currently three Futsal Teams are competing in local competitions.
  • Basketball Program. Free basketball training is offered twice a week by community volunteers for young people in Blacktown LGA. Participants are linked to local competitions and programs. Partners in this project include Blacktown Police ECLO, BYSA, Blacktown PCYC and Southern Sudanese Association.
  • Outreach Locations:
    SydWest Multicultural Services Inc Humanitarian Youth Worker provides outreach services to Penrith LGA two day per week. Partnership projects include a Homework Support Programs with NMA at St Mary’s Community Centre on Tuesday’s 3:45 – 5:45 during school term. Various holidays program are delivered in partnership with The Warehouse and other local health organizations.

    There is ongoing recruitment for volunteer for both Homework Support Programs at Blacktown and St Mary's(Please note: Placement is subject to completion of a working with children check).
