The Project trains Volunteer and Community members to run the program, "CALD FAMILY HARMONY".The program also contains sessions for parents addressing risk taking behavior in teens. "How to drug proof your kids" a program of focus on the family. The program provides trainees with culturally appropriate strategies in conflict resolution between parents and teens.

What we do

  • To empower you with the skills to address and resolve family conflict(Family Harmony Program)
  • To educate and inform you about potential drug related issues your children might face (Drug proof your kids)
  • To keep children safe within our homes and communities

The Project presents training in:

Parenting skills for parents of teenagers and cover the following topics:

            1. Discipline: What is it? and why do we need it?

            2. Are there solutions that can make everyone happy?

            3. How do we respond to the problems?

            4. Walk in my shoes for a day

            5. It's not what you say it's the way you say it!

            6. Why have all the responsiblity when you can share the load?

            7. What is to gain by not resolving conflict?

            8. What skills help the negotiation process?

The program offers information on understanding substance abuse, support to help kids make positive choices and provides prevention tools for parents. As the strongest force against drugs, parents need proven stratigies.

The target groups are Sudanese, Afghani, SriLankan, Indian, Sierra Leone and Liberian.

Sessions include:

            1. Understand challenges faced by children when it comes to

                drugs and illegal substances in their community

            2. Learn how to communicate effectively with their children about   

                drugs

            3. Develop strategies to help their children make informed choices

                about drug use

            4. Examine their own beliefs, attitudes and behavior about drug

                 use

            5. Identify local organizations and resouces avilable to families

            6. Benefit from the insight of other parents who share ideas,  

                strategies and stories from their own experience

"KEEPING CHILDREN SAFE" A trained and qualified facilitator run sessions within target groups to enable participants to recognise abuse and neglect, understand the effect on children and make changes to prevent child abuse and neglect.

How we do this

  • Conducted by trained facilitators from your community, who understand your culture and values
  • Planned in a neutral and well structured manner
  • Tailored to provide you with relevant information and facilitate discussion
  • Focussed on helping you improve your communication, negotiation and conflict resolution skills

Sessions include:

            1.Effects of abuse on social relationships

            2.Neglect and preventing neglect

            3.Physical abuse and alternatives to physical abuse

            4. Emotional abuse, Domestic violence and Building up a Childs self 

                esteem

            5.Sexual Abuse and Protective Behavior

            6.Indicators of Abuse and Neglect, Disclosure and helping children

               cope with Abuse

Who is it for?

  • Family Harmony Program is for parents and children having difficulties resolving conflict
  • Families wishing to understand and prevent family problems by developing better communication
  • Parents who wish to understand the hazards of drug abuse that their children may face
  • Parents to recognise abuse and neglect and the effect it has on children
